New Clever, New Base, New Plan, New Job

Two new videos in less than a week? It’s a miracle! (Not really: the second one below was mostly done a couple months ago, but I felt guilty for not finishing the LED stuff sooner, so I tackled that starting in mid-April, then finished the Airtable video.)

First off, here’s the latest cleverness to hit the tubes: the LONG overdue conclusion to the LED Bar Graph story!

Close on its heels is the second video for my fairly new All About That Base channel. I haven’t talked about that in this space before, but it’s all about using Airtable, an awesome database-in-the-cloud application that I got hooked on a little over a year ago. This one is my attempt to demystify the AND() and OR() functions that can be used in Airtable formulas.

New Plan

This brings me to a much-debated topic within my own head: how on earth am I going to keep up with two channels?

Long story short: my current plan is to just alternate between them.

I’m not going to lock in to a set release schedule for either, because the way life is right now, that would a) be impossible to maintain, and b) drive me nuts. I’ll just take turns on each one, releasing whenever there is something to release. Ideally I’d like to produce at least one video per channel per month, which would be roughly one video every two weeks. But again, don’t hold me to that (that’s mostly aimed at you, little nagging inner voice).

Because the AATB (All About That Base) video was the most recent release, it’s back to Clever Tagline for the next one. And to give you a small tease, the next Clever Tagline video on my plate will very likely be another guest tutorial for FXhome. Sadly I can’t talk about the topic just yet, but I will when the time is right.

New Job

Since leaving Reel FX in 2012, I’ve been largely working freelance/contract/part-time jobs. For quite a while, I was fine with that, and felt like I might just be a freelancer forever. However, I began feeling the desire to go back to full-time work during the past couple of years, but the opportunities I pursued didn’t pan out.

Last fall my wife and I decided to leave the Dallas-Fort Worth area after 15 years and live with her wife’s parents in Las Vegas. They’re experiencing greater health issues, and really needed someone to be in their home to keep an eye on things. We were in a pretty good position to make that happen, so we made plans to move. Initially I thought I’d just continue doing similar freelance/contract work in the Vegas area, but one week before our planned move, a full-time opportunity in Las Vegas presented itself that felt like a perfect fit. I applied from Texas, interviewed shortly after arriving in Las Vegas, and was offered the position not long before Christmas.

Beginning January 3rd, I became the new Director of Community Relations for Las Vegas Lights FC, a professional soccer team in the USL Championship league. At the time I’m writing this, the entire office staff is on furlough while we wait for the league to decide what’s going to happen with the 2020 soccer season thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, my first few months with the team have been a blast, and I can’t wait to get back to work once the season resumes.
